Dr. Simon Lichtiger - New York City History Teacher

A trained physician, Dr. Simon Lichtiger enjoyed a career in gastroenterology that lasted over three decades. Over the years, Dr. Simon Lichtiger served as an attending gastroenterologist at Mount Sinai Medical Center, as well as a professor of gastroenterology and the director of the Inflammatory Bowel Division at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.

Dr. Lichtiger received recognition from the medical community, including receiving the Leo Davidoff Society Certificate of Distinction for Outstanding Achievement as a House Officer in recognition of his efforts teaching medical students. He also received a Certificate of Appreciation for Clinical Research from the Department of Gastroenterology at Mount Sinai Medical Center. In addition, Dr. Lichtiger has presented on gastroenterology topics to the American Gastroenterological Association and the Falk Symposium on Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis in Germany.

After 34 years in medicine, Dr. Lichtiger shifted to a career as a high school educator when Ateres High School hired him to teach in the fall of 2025. As part of his work as a history teacher, he creates a curriculum that blends literature and film.

In his free time, Dr. Lichtiger enjoys running. He has completed eight marathons. He also plays the piano.
